- On Wed-Fri 15-17 June 2005, Thanasis Kottas and I presented a 2.5-day workshop on Practical Bayesian Non-Parametric and Semi-Parametric Modeling as the keynote event of the 30th Annual Summer Institute of Applied Statistics, sponsored by the Department of Statistics at Brigham Young University (more details may be found here).
  In particular you may wish to click on the 30th Annual Summer Institute of Applied Statistics link just mentioned; it leads to a page where you can download R code, data, and background information (all prepared by Thanasis) for fitting a location-normal Dirichlet process mixture model.
- The formal AMS proposal for graduate degrees in Statistics and Stochastic Modeling has been unanimously approved by the UCSC Graduate Council, and is now undergoing UC system-wide review at the Coordinating Committee on Graduate Affairs.
  Our proposed graduate program is innovative in several ways: for example, in their coursework the graduate students in this program will develop skills of a fusion character that intertwine strengths in statistics and stochastic modeling with methods of applied mathematical modeling, and they will pursue their dissertation work by becoming deeply immersed in important problems in science or engineering as the basis of the innovative theories and methods they develop.
