AMS 280C : Seminars on Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics
This is an informal seminar series led by Profs. Nic Brummell and Pascale Garaud on the general topic of any geophysical and astrophysical fluid dynamics (GAFD). Seminars are held at 4:00pm Thurs in BE137. Please contact Nic or Pascale if you would like to attend or speak at the seminar. Format is very informal (lots of questions) and expected to be at a level that rookie graduate students can at least understand the first half of the talk. Graduate students are encouraged to take the seminar for 2 units credit under the catalogue number of AMS280C.
The current schedule is:
- 09/24: Adrienne Traxler -- "2D stability of the Su-Gardner equation". Some work that Adrienne did over the summer at the Woods Hole GFD program on nonlinear waves -- tsunamis, solitons, shallow water nonlinear waves.
- 10/01: Nic Brummell -- "The Solar Dynamo: Where are we?". A rookies introduction to the state-of-play in solar dynamo theory, with special emphasis on the current role of large numerical simulations.
- 10/08: Erinna Chen -- "On the scattering of the internal tide due to topography". Erinna will tell us about the new work that she did at the Woods Hole GFD program over the last summer.
- 10/15: Scott Noble -- "The GRMHD paradigm of black hole accretion". NOTE SPECIAL LOCATION -- ISB 102
- 10/22: Luis Accevedo-Arreguin: Advancement to Candidacy practice talk
- 10/29: Cancelled (go to Physics Colloquium on Dark Matter)
- 11/5 : Pascale Garaud "The lithium dip problem"
- 11/12: Gary Glatzmaier "Simulations of the VKS dynamo experiment"
