Welcome to the home page of the Department of Applied Mathematics & Statistics (AMS) at UCSC!
We are a young department that began as a "program" in 2001. Since then, we have grown to twelve ladder-rank faculty, two adjunct faculty, two lecturers, several researchers and more than thirty graduate students. We are proud of our growing list of alumni and the brilliant professional and academic careers that they are pursuing. Our research focuses on scientific and engineering applications, either building models empirically from data (statistics) or looking for mathematical descriptions of the biological and physical processes (applied mathematics). There are many connections between these approaches. The ones developed by our faculty include stochastic dynamic models, hierarchical models with physical structures and design and analysis of computer experiments. We have collaborations in a wide range of areas, including astrophysics, astronomy, biology, climatology, finance, fisheries, genetics, neurosciences, among others. We work in an environment full of collegiality, sharing resources, research projects and often co-supervising students. Our areas of excellence in applied mathematics are: mathematical biology, fluid dynamics and control theory. Our areas of excellence in statistics are: Bayesian inference, Bayesian non-parametric methods, statistical genetics, time series analysis and environmetrics. By browsing the web pages of our faculty and students, you will find information describing the wide array of exciting applications of our research. As well, please visit our technical reports web page for a sampling of papers we've written recently.
